I like to think that I know everyone and everything but sometimes things slip past me. One being the designer John Dickinson. Now I knew of him, atleast through his designs, but only recent discovered who he was and what he had created. Born and bred in California, John Dickinson is considered one of the most influential and interiors and furniture designers of the 20th century.

You might know him from his classic plaster furniture, created in the 1970′s. There has been a huge influx of interpretations over the last few years. One of the companies who does it best is Oly, who I’ve carried in the store since the day I opened. John’s most known pieces are his footed stool, his faux bois 4 poster bed and his footed bench.

And check out Oly’s pieces…..

the true genius of john dickinson was how ahead of his time he was. He was one of the first designers to utilize inexpensive fabrics in elegant applications. (think of restoration hardware, elegant styled furniture but slipcovered or upholstered in basic cotton, linen or burlap)

For this alone, I will be forever grateful to mr. dickinson. So next time you are perusing through your favorite design blog or your favorite magazine (House Beautiful!) keep an eye out, i bet you’ll see his influence somewhere in those pages…

We get these fabulous vintage pillows from a really hip chick in Texas. She finds the vintage needlepoint and crewel pillows, cleans them up with new inserts and new backings, to make them as beautiful as the day they were made.

I first noticed these at the NYIGF a few years back and was smitten. Unfortunately my mom had talked me out of buying them. But they stuck in my head. Then at the next show I just said “I’m doing it!” and I almost bought her entire booth out.

We have had such great response to these pillows. They remind those of us, who remember them, of a different time in our lives. These pillows are better than a photo or a memory because you can touch them, cuddle with them, and most importantly have a chuckle about them.

By Jared Ainscough, Assistant Art Director
I have walked by Hudson a few times as I have looked for lunch spots in Boston’s South End. I will proudly admit that this store won me over with a beautiful pumpkin and gourd display in the fall, and I’ve been hooked ever since. The store is always beautifully arranged and the selection of goods is impeccable. This Pipa Table Lamp is really the tip of the iceberg. Every piece in the shop shares this sense of classic design with a twist. I love the detail on this lamp—a nice balance of delicate, intricate pattern and a solid weight and proportion.

Welcome to the first of our weekly ‘have you met….’ series. This will be a weekly blog entry to introduce all of you to new product lines, and even lines we’ve carried since day one that you might not know. This week I am happy to show you all our new custom line of Hudson designed ceramics made exclusively for us by Jill Rosenwald.

I built upon classic horizontal stripes (which are starting to be my signature) and kept with Jill’s classic color-filled interior and painted gold rim. Last season I had created this H buckle design which was great, but ended up being a bit specific. Alot of people purchased those because of an affilliation with the letter ‘H’. This design is across the board, and simply put – timeless.

We are offering a variety of sizes – large serving bowl, tall vase, pencil jar, nut bowl and a long pencil tray. all the season specific colors are intermixed throughout. I actually leave that up to the Jill Rosenwald studio to choose placement of colors etc..

I hope you all come in and check out all the pieces in person, but hurry up because they are already going fast. Though no worries, a new order is already in the works. And if you want to learn more about Jill Rosenwald and her pottery please go check her out at www.jillrosenwald.com

I have wanted to start my own line of furnishings for some time now…Upholstery, Casegoods, Fabric, Lighting – the whole show! Well I have taken my first few steps towards that goal. The first step has been to create 2 casegood pieces, based off of the classic parsons shape, but tweaking the proportions a bit. And instead of a wood finish, or a painted finish, I decided to kick it up a notch and wrap the tables in classic cork. I think these pieces are casual yet elegant, and add a touch of california feel to any room. Please stop by to check these tables out, they are both currently on the floor. And I’d love to hear your feedback!

And the second step towards my goal is the start of my own upholstery line. I am in the design phase of creating 2 pieces of my own design by our favorite custom furniture maker, Verellen. I am so excited and can’t wait for the unveiling (which will probably be early summer!) So keep your eye out! xoxo J
